FAO (UN)
The Food and Agriculture Organisation was founded in October 1945 with a mandate to raise levels of nutrition and standards of living, to improve agricultural productivity, and to better the condition of rural populations. Other FAO sites:

FARMESA
FARMESA ( Farm-Level Applied Research Methods in East and Southern Africa) is a sub-regional programme funded by Sida and executed by the Food and Agricultural Organisation of the United Nations. Farmesa is a product of four Sida funded regional programmes which covered the following areas: aquaculture, small-scale technology development, integrated pest management and farming systems. FARMESA will cover these areas and any other areas in demand from participating countries.

Sustainable Development Dimensions
Recognising the need to take a more holistic and strategic approach to development support and poverty alleviation, FAO established its Sustainable Development Department in January 1995. It aims at promoting, coordinating and leading in the formulation of concepts, policies and strategies for:

  • greater involvement of rural people, especially the poor and women, in their own development
  • generation and transfer of knowledge and technologies for sustainable development
  • management of natural resources and protection of the environment

World Agricultural Information Centre (WAICENT)
WAICENT is actively involved in promoting and facilitating the capacities to access to collect, analyse, interpret and disseminate information relating to food security, and agricultural development in Member States, and particularly in countries targeted by the Special Programme on Food Security.

World Food Summit
World leaders assembled in Rome in November 1996 for the World Food Summit aimed at renewing global commitment to the fight against hunger.
